ABOUT SUDBURY YOUTH BASKETBALL

Sudbury Youth Basketball (SYB) is a youth sports program available to all boys and girls in grades 3-8 in the town of Sudbury.  The program runs from early November to early March (see KEY DATES for further info) and includes both an In-Town league that is like an intramural league and a Travel Team league (for 5th through 8th graders) that competes against teams outside of Sudbury.

Due to gym constraints and the tremendous growth in the program, the number of teams  in each division is limited each season.  Slots are filled on a first come first serve basis using registration dates/postmarks.  Avoid disappointment and register early  for the winter season.  Be sure to save your registration Email confirmation for your records.

See below for a description of our league structure and the different programs we offer.

1) IN-TOWN LEAGUE:

The SYB In-Town league is a program in which all players participate and compete with other Sudbury youth.  There are 4 boys and 4 girls divisions based on grade level (not age):

MIDGET 3   3rd graders
MIDGET 4  4th graders
BANTAM  5th & 6th graders
CADET  7th & 8th graders

  • ASSESSMENTS: There are no tryouts, but rather one Assessment Night per division where the kids run through drills while the coaches look on; the goal is to see how kids play so that we can then put together balanced teams and spread out the talent (see KEY DATES tab).
  • PRACTICE INFO:  Once placed on a team, players will practice one night a week beginning in mid-November:
    • Midget 3 and Midget 4 practices (boys & girls) are usually held on Friday nights; the gym location will remain the same but the start time will change from week to week, i.e. 1 week may be 5-6:20pm, next week 6:20-7:40pm & next week 7:40-9:00pm
    • Bantams & Cadets practices could be on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday nights depending on your coach's schedule and gym time availability - this isn't decided until late October.  In most cases, Bantams (5th/6th graders) practice from 6:00-7:30pm and Cadets (7th/8th graders) from 7:30-9:00pm.
  • GAMES:  All teams are scheduled (subject to weather cancellations) to play a 10 game season beginning the weekend after Thanksgiving
    • Midget 3 and Midget 4 (Boys & Girls) games will be on SUNDAYS anywhere from 11:45am-6pm.  NOTE: Midget 3 will play 3 v 3 games.
    • Girls Bantam games will be on SATURDAYS anywhere from 9am-1pm
    • Boys Bantam games will be on SATURDAYS anywhere from 9am-3:30pm
    • Boys Cadet games will be on SATURDAYS anywhere from 2:15-6:00pm
    • Girls Cadet games will be on SATURDAYS anywhere from 2:15-6pm
  • POST SEASON PLAY-OFFS: Midget 4, Bantam and Cadet teams participate in a post-season single-elimination tournament often referred to as "March Madness." Midget 3 post season details are TBD.  This begins 2 weeks after February Vacation.
  • MINIMUM PLAYING TIME: There is a 50% minimum and 75% maximum playing time rule for all In-Town games.
  • REGISTRATION FEES: The fee for In-Town League participation is $160 per player for Midget 3 and Midget 4, $185 per player for Bantam and Cadet, payable at the time of registration.
  • COACHES NEEDED:  In-Town teams are always looking for coaches, particularly at the Cadet and Bantam levels.  If you have any interest, please consider volunteering your time with your son or daughter and their friends.  You can indicate your interest by checking the appropriate area when registering your child.

TRAVEL TEAMS

A SYB travel team is a potential option for those seeking a higher level of competition against teams from other towns.  The level of commitment for a travel team is greater and is not an option for everyone.  Players who make a travel team are expected to make basketball their primary winter sport (see below bullets for explanation of time commitment).

Try-outs (see TRYOUT DATES tab) are held for each grade-level and not all players trying out will be selected for a travel team (those players will automatically be placed on an In-Town team).  Please consider your child's basketball ability and family commitment prior to registering to prevent possible disappointment.

  • TEAMS AND LEAGUES:  There will be 2-3 travel teams for boys and girls in each of the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades that will compete in the Metrowest League (www.metrowestbball.com).
  • TRY-OUTS:  Tryouts for each grade level will be held in late September / early October (see KEY DATES tab in the future for exact dates).  Players must tryout for their respective grade's team.
  • PRACTICE & GAMES:  Once selected for a travel team, players will practice twice a week beginning in late October or early November.  Practices for travel teams consist of 1 weeknight practice (could be on any night between Monday-Thursday).  All travel teams will also practice or have games on Saturdays.  Games are generally held every Sunday from the first week of December through early March.  There will be games scheduled on one or both weekends of February vacation and possibly the last weekend of December break.  Please consider the increased time commitment for practice and games when deciding whether your child will try out for a travel team.
  • TOURNAMENTS & ADDITIONAL GAMES:  All boys and girls travel teams usually participate in a Thanksgiving weekend tournament.  All teams also play in Metrowest's post-season playoffs that begin in early March.  In addition, depending on each individual coach, additional tournaments and games may be scheduled during the season (i.e. during December break or February vacation)
  • PLAYING TIME MINIMUM:  As this is a competitive program, the minimum playing time for each player on a travel team is 25% of a game (generally 10 minutes per game).  We are one of the few towns in the 31 town Metrowest travel league that has a minimum playing time rule.  It is very important that parents and players alike be ready to accept that they may only get into 25% of games.
  • REGISTRATION FEES:  The fee for travel team participation will be a total of $335 per player - $185 is paid at the time of registration and the balance is due and payable at the first practice.
