The SYB K-2 Program is a developmental basketball program for boys and girls kindergarten through 2nd graders.

Each week, there will be series of whole group demonstrations on individual and team skills. After each of these demonstrations, we will break down into small groups and practice these skills. Players will also participate in fun drills and contests each week. Later in the season, the players will learn team concepts by playing controlled half court games of 3 on 3.

The emphasis in the K-2 program will be on teaching the participants “how to play” rather than “running plays” and “winning games.” Each week, we will build on the previous week’s skills and concepts.

Location:  The K-2 Program have traditionally taken place at the Fieldhouse in Sudbury.

Eligibility: Boys and girls in kindergarten through 2nd grade who live or attend school in Sudbury  are eligible to

Equipment: Younger players need to use a smaller and lighter basketball to learn how to shoot properly. We will be using a 27.5” youth basketball in our demonstrations and drills. SYB will provide basketballs at each session.

Parent Coaches: We are looking for parents to serve as assistant coaches. If interested, please sign up.

Ball Size: 27.5 inches in circumference. [In accordance with USA Basketball and NBA Age-Appropriate Rules and Standards for Youth Basketball Competitions.] Using a smaller ball that is more proportional to the size of children’s hands allows for better ball control, leading to enhanced skill development.

Rim Height: 8.5’  [In accordance with USA Basketball and NBA Age-Appropriate Rules and Standards for Youth Basketball Competitions.] Lowering the basket height for younger players assists with developing proper shooting form and increases the opportunity for shooting success. It is estimated that a 10’ hoop for 5’ tall, 100 pound kid is the equivalent of a 6’ tall, 180 pound adult with more upper and low body strength, gross motors skills, and balance shooting on 22’ rim.  It would be difficult for most adults to learn or maintain proper shooting mechanics at that hoop height.

Schedule Update: Sudbury Youth Basketball has had a tremendous turnout for the K-2 program – both boys / girls. It’s far exceeded our expectations. To provide the best opportunity to give more kids a chance to play basketball this winter, we need to slightly modify the schedule. We apologize for the inconvenience, but SYB feels that this is the best opportunity to allow more kids to play basketball. If the changes have impacted your decision to play, please contact us.
