Welcome to seventh grade travel basketball! My apologies for the delay in getting this email out to you. There were some injuries, administrative details and technical issues on my part, but now we are good to go! I am really excited about coaching your boys this season. I'll be coaching along with Fran Boucher and assisted by my son Liam Dolan, who is a high school player and has participated in Sudbury youth travel teams. Some of our goals are to improve upon the boys' skills, work on fundamentals of the game, learn more of the value of being part of a team, and having fun along the way, win or lose.
Travel sports are a big commitment, so thank you for making the sacrifices to get your kids to practice and to the games, especially when they are away.
The preseason is starting this week, tomorrow night for our team! Our practices are Tuesdays and Saturdays. We will start out 7:45-9:15 at Loring School Tuesday the 5th. Again, my apologies for the late notice. Looks like most of our preseason Tuesday practices will be 7:30-9:00 at the Fieldhouse. Saturdays to start we will be 9:00-10:30 AM at Haynes Elementary School. The season typically ends in early March wrapping up with playoffs in each division.
Our team will be playing in the MetroWest league. We will have 12 league games starting Sunday, December 8.
Our goal is to balance the playing time in each game, but as this is a competitive program, we may make slight adjustments if needed. Your son may not always be playing in a position of his choice. We will try our best to put the team and kids in the best positions for the team.
Practices are where kids get better, both individually and as a team. We will be stressing the importance of practice to the kids - being there on time, ready to engage, working hard, listening, etc. but we would also appreciate your help with this.
Email will be one of the main modes of communication with parents. Please send along any email addresses that you would like added or deleted from the team list.
Travel basketball is a commitment. SYB expects that during basketball season travel basketball takes priority over other sports. Although we all have occasional conflicts that can't be avoided, we do expect players to try to attend all practices and games barring injury or illness. As we go through the season if your plans change or conflicts arise, please notify the coaches as soon as you can. Having this information is important for planning purposes around practices and games. Especially given our smaller size team, it is critical for games, as we will need to know if we will be short players as well as allowing us to set up the lineup prior to games.
We will also be needing parent participation this season. We will need additional volunteers for scorekeepers, timers, pictures, video, stats, etc.
Finally, we will do our best to make this an enjoyable experience for all. If kids can have fun and develop as individuals and as a team, we will have succeeded this season!
Hope to see all your boys tomorrow night!
